Like the “Easter Island” set, this chessboard was created from leftover cellular concrete from building my outdoor BBQ. The colors are vibrant, festive—just like Ibiza, Spain. Because the leftover pieces were small, the chess pieces range from 4 to 2.5 inches high. A considerable undertaking: 32 sculpted pieces. Queens have large, full eyes, kings are bearded and imposing, while bishops, knights, and rooks are playful and fun. This chess set later inspired King Pépito, Queen Pépita, and the blue pieces: the Bishop, Knight, and Rook. The board is made of oak.
