The Aborigines

These two sculptures illustrate the fusion between the form of the sculpture (Moai statues created by the Rapa Nui people) and Australian Aboriginal colors. They both take us on a journey to the Pacific Ocean. The statues have a somewhat stern expression, reminiscent of Moai figures. Then comes the painting: “Oceanic pointillism,” a technique widely used by Aboriginal artists. The dots are close together but do not blend. They help conceal sacred symbols. I used vibrant colors and added symbols connected to ancestral Aboriginal stories. Painted this way, the statues become radiant and joyful.
